Media Bio Balls (MBBR) are advanced biological filter media designed to support beneficial bacteria and maintain a balanced pond ecosystem. The bio-comb style structure provides a large protected surface area where beneficial bacteria can attach and grow, helping convert fish waste and ammonia into natural nutrients that support aquatic plants and healthy pond conditions.
Unlike traditional filter media such as foam pads, mats, or lava rock, fluidized media naturally sheds older biofilm layers while allowing new bacterial colonies to develop. This self-cleaning action reduces maintenance while maintaining consistent biological filtration performance. The media moves freely inside filters or weirs, maximizing oxygen exposure and improving bacterial activity.
Fluidized bio media can support higher fish loads without requiring larger pumps or filtration systems, making it ideal for moving bed bio-reactor (MBBR) systems and biological pond filters. Beneficial bacteria typically begin colonizing the media within 7–20 days in a stable pond environment. Available in both large and small media sizes with 1, 2, and 3.5 cubic foot options to match different pond filtration needs.
