Aqua Pulse 5,200 GPH Hybrid Drive Submersible Pond Pump

Posted by Garry Guard on Mar 30th 2025

Just installed this Aqua Pulse 5200gph Hydrid drive pump to replace my 10yr old Little Giant WGP-95-PW 4280gph pump that died a week ago. So far so good. Wanted to try a Hybrid pump versus the Direct drive of my Little Giant pump. My Koi pond is 10ft w x 30ft L x 3ft deep x 2ft deep (shallow). i am figuring the pond is around 5600 gal. The first thing i noticed would be the flow going through my (2x) 55gal drum filter system and a water feature (water shooting up and allowing the water to fall onto rocks before returning to pond), is about the same as my previous Little Giant direct drive 4280 gph pump. Even though the Aqua Pulse is rated at 5200 gph as a hybrid drive, the overall flow through my system is the same as the slightly lower direct drive pump. I am glad that when i purchased the Aqua Pulse pump that i got one that is rated gph higher than previous pump. If i had gotten the Aqua Pulse 4200 gph hybrid pump, i would have been disappointed. So far the new pump is working as it should. I hope it will lasts as long as the previous pump, only time will tell. The take away from this initial experience with Aqua Pulse Hybrid drive versus Little Giant direct drive is that - direct drive will have a higher head pressure at a given distance so you will need a higher gph hybrid to get the same as a lower direct drive. So in my case, the hybrid at 5200 gph is the same as a direct 4280 gph. But on the flip side, a hybrid drive is supposed to be more power efficient than a direct drive..... in this case, the Aqua Pulse is rated basically at 300W power use...... the Little Giant direct drive is rated at 700W power use.... So i am looking forward in seeing my electric statement over the next few months... fingers crossed for lower electric bill....
